According to a 2019 study by CIVICUS, an organization monitoring human rights implementation, 58.3% of the population in Europe and Central Asia live in countries rated as fully or partially respecting human rights. Today, that figure has halved to just 26.5%. Basic freedoms face constant obstacles, and confrontations between defenders of human rights and authorities in Europe’s largest democracies are intensifying.
