North Macedonia is still at the top of the list of the most polluted countries in Europe and the world. Of the total of 5.5 billion MKD of the Macedonian budget for the year 2024, only 0.83 percent was allocated for environmental protection. Eco activists complain that not a single penny has been set aside to reduce air pollution, from which thousands of people fall ill and die every year.
