640,000 MACEDONIANS IN “DETENTION”

Macedonia and Greece signed the Prespa Agreement on June 17, 2018, and the constitutional amendments to change the name Macedonia to North Macedonia were voted on January 11, 2019. Macedonia undertook to, within five years, by February 12, 2024, to change out citizens’ IDs with the old name. The five-year deadlines have expired, and currently, more than 600,000 citizens do not have a passport with the new name and cannot leave the country. Chaos is an understatement to describe what is happening with the other documents such as identity cards, drivers and traffic licenses. The phones for making an appointment for new documents are not working either.
