In December, Belgrade and Sarajevo ranked among the most polluted cities in the world. According to IQAir data, Sarajevo’s air quality index surpassed 300, considered highly dangerous for health. Fine particulate matter (PM) levels averaged 30 micrograms per cubic meter annually, spiking to over 200 in winter, meaning that citizens then breathe air up to ten times more polluted than recommended. Belgrade’s winter PM concentrations exceeded 150, and in Skopje, they reached 170 micrograms per cubic meter.
